Ms. Jennifer Bought AT&T a Clean Slate

She probably works in a building on Wireless Drive in Greensboro. She was patient on a day I wasn't. Here's the receipt — and here's the bill.

The day started rough. The smoke alarm wouldn't shut up — and i wasn't cooking anything, which is the part that still bugs me. An hour with the breakers. I was already in the mood to yell at whoever picked up the next phone call i made, and that phone call was AT&T.

She picked up. She said her name was Jennifer.

Probably not her real name. We both knew that. That's fine. Roger isn't mine either when i'm calling about a bill.

I started in stressed. She didn't match my energy. She just... worked the problem. Listened. Found a line on my bill i didn't know i was being charged for. Took it off. Saved me about sixty bucks a month — call it seven hundred a year — on a day she had every right to put me on hold and go grab a coffee instead.

She was patient with me, on a day I wasn't.

Before she let me go we talked for a minute, like people, and she wrote down the URL to this site on a sticky note. So she might see this. Or she might not. Either way ....

the part where i look up where she works

Jennifer was talking to a guy in North Carolina, and Jennifer doesn't sound like she's in Bangalore. AT&T runs one of its biggest US customer-service call centers right here in NC — 3709 Wireless Drive, Greensboro. Same state. Active hiring (more than fifty open seats as of this week). If you had to put money on where she was sitting when she picked up, you put it on Greensboro.

So that's the building. A long rectangle, a parking lot, a lot of headsets inside it. People walking in at 7:55 every morning past the same chain-link fence. Including, most likely, Ms. Jennifer.

Here's what AT&T does well, on paper. Their Fiber product has been ranked #1 in the American Customer Satisfaction Index four years in a row — 78 out of 100 in the 2025 read, ahead of Verizon Fios and Google Fiber. That's a real thing. They earned it. Credit where it's due.

  • AT&T's own cell-phone customers in the same ACSI report took the LARGEST decrease in the entire industry — call quality dropped 6% to a 77, network capability dropped 8% to a 76.
  • Cell-phone customer satisfaction across the whole industry just hit a decade low.
  • ACSI flat-out says call-center satisfaction "lags significantly" for both fiber and non-fiber providers.
  • Complaint-handling satisfaction across the sector fell 10 points year over year.

Translation: AT&T wins awards for the pipe in the ground and is losing the conversation that happens when you pick up the phone.

So the cannon at AT&T is uncocked. Today. NEVER in the past. Today only. Clock resets from 3 PM on May 20, 2026. Ms. Jennifer bought you that.

If you are an AT&T customer reading this — next time you would have spent fifteen minutes yelling at a Jennifer, send the dollar value of that yelling to GUM instead. greensborourbanministry.org/donate. Tell them Jennifer sent you. They wont know who that is. That's the point.

If you are an AT&T executive reading this — Jennifer probably drives past that building every morning, the one on Wireless Drive. You should know that. You should also send a check. And before you do anything else you should pull her file, find out what her actual name is, and write her a thank-you note from the C-suite — because YOU GOT A GOOD ONE HERE and you have a customer-service department that, by YOUR OWN paid satisfaction surveys, is dragging your premium product down by ten and twenty points at a time.

Pay the front line like the front line is what keeps your fiber awards on the wall. Because it is.

If you're reading this. I hope you didn't get yelled at too much today. I hope you dont take that shit home. I hope someone at AT&T sees what you did and pays you for it in a way that actually shows up. I hope you never have to talk to me on a bad day again — and if you do, i hope i remember this.
