Federal Judge Blocks Alabama's GOP-Backed Redistricting Plan

In a decisive move, a federal appeals court has blocked Alabama's proposed congressional redistricting plan, which was seen as favoring Republican interests. This decision represents a temporary setback for the GOP's efforts to gain an additional seat by eliminating a Black-majority district in the southeastern region of the state.

The Alabama Republicans planned to use a map that had been previously blocked in 2023, following a Supreme Court ruling that limited the use of race in creating electoral districts. However, the court found the plan intentionally discriminatory, maintaining the use of a map with two majority Black districts where Democrats hold significant sway.

Congressman Shomari Figures, a Democrat from Alabama, praised the court's decision, acknowledging the substantial evidence of discrimination. 'This is a significant step in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go before this fight is settled,' he remarked, anticipating further appeals from the state.

Governor Kay Ivey has scheduled several House primaries using the contested map for August 11, while other primaries in the state occurred earlier in May. The ruling comes amid a broader push by Trump and GOP-led states in the South to redraw congressional maps favorably for Republicans.

Similar redistricting efforts are unfolding in Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, as Republicans aim to consolidate power across the region.
